Two newsworthy items to talk about from this weekend.... first, the social on Saturday at 5pm in the warm and...... second, the Raiders session on the playground on Sunday in the wintery chill as we found ourselves in the direct line of fire from a strong blast straight out of the north.
Raiders Christmas Social
A special big thank-you to everyone who turned up with added gannet fodder.... the result was that no-one went away empty handed from the serving tables.
We had iced buns arriving, home-made mince pies and flapjack.... along with a mountain of crisps.
The roving minstrel brought a musical debutant (ie Adrian and son Lucas).
There were several who showed their juggling prowess (or lack of) with three balls and various fancy hand movements.
We had a unicyclist (George) who neatly avoided going through the front of the huge fish tank out in the entrance hall (that would have been something)
A special mention should go to a second father and son combination..... namely Iain and David Clamp.... it was young (Tommy Cooper in waiting) Iain who took the lead while dad rationed him (with some difficulty) to just three jokes.... the result was a big round of applause.
We might well see Iain on the Michael McIntyre Comedy Show in a couple of years time. Well done Iain..... good place to cut your teeth, lad.
Furzefield session - Sunday
There was a definite attack of chilly hands today, so extra-thick gloves in the Christmas stocking would be a good idea.... another idea would be see if the Raiders' funds might run to an old-fashioned brazier and a couple of sacks of coke.
We were close to a lock-out again... not only were the outer gates locked but the inner ones too... and there was some time switch mechanism which meant that they were forever closing.... nearly a crushed car bonnet or two there.... until gloriously a dad (Tony) just stood there, reading a book in the icy blast you should know, in order to press the 'open' switch whenever new riders appeared... I call that devotion to duty.
The skimming of ice on the ponds in the shade next to the school was no problem as we had plenty of space to operated in the rest of the playground.
Final race - younger ages - short course 3 laps

Final race - older ages - longer course - unknown/disputed number of laps (but mostly riders did about seven)
