We are compiling two leaderboards in order to list the top cycling schools in our area…. and the question is does your school want to take part?
If you do, then please get in touch via our CONTACT page.

What are the two challenges?
The first one is based on cycling skills such as cornering, weaving and riding in a straight line, through a narrow gap, without wavering.
The second is completely separate and is simply an endurance challenge.

Why the two?
Because many young cyclists have lots of skills but not a lot of endurance…. and those who can ride like clockwork don’t necessarily have what it takes when it comes to skills.
So there’s room for both, hence the separate challenges.

Who is this open to?
All the primary and junior schools within a 20mile radius of Redhill. It would seem that the more riders who take part in one of these mass-participation challenges the higher their school’s score is likely to be. Quite right. So pack ‘em in.

Getting down to details then, what exactly is the skills challenge?

  • It involves riding (repeatedly) round a square. Along one side there are a series of cones to weave round, so in effect a slalom run, while on the return leg there are two narrow passages to ride through without disturbing the lines of cones on either side. Disturb any cone during a single circuit and you log a penalty.
  • A successful lap earns that rider one point….. that means all the obstacles were successfully avoided.
  • Hitting an obstacle means the loss of two points.
  • So a rider who rushes round bowling over several cones can lose his team lots of points?
  • Yes. The team starts out with zero points and if some riders ride at a mad pace knocking over cones all over the place they can rack up such a big minus score that it wipes out the good work of their team-mates.

So going steadily can be the best policy?
Definitely.

Do the riders all start at the same time?
You can stagger the start as you wish but yes, once things are up and running your entire team will be working their way round the circuit at once. Overtaking is fine.

How long does the challenge last?
12 minutes

What about the second challenge, what is that all about?
Your team all lines up at the start and starts completing laps of a short circuit which measures 30m long and 10m wide. It is on grass. Riders can stop whenever they want should they need a drink or a rest. Overtaking is fine.

And how long does this challenge last?
It is also 12 minutes.
