[From coach Stephen]

Raiders – 18 May 2014.

Summer is finally here and what a glorious day it was with quite a few new riders turning up to try Raiders following the Priory Park Sports festival. Welcome to Redhill Raiders and hope you enjoyed yourself and see you again in the future.

Older riders – coached by Stephen with the help of Andy

After a warm up we focused on doing flying laps around the small oval and then venturing out to the bigger circuit using the whole playground. In between we practiced doing track stands, Max who is 13 and a new comer to Raiders demonstrated how it should be done with a good balance and control of his bike.

[From coach Paul]

As the ground was dry it meant that I could use the grass at the back. The advantage of the grass is that it gives us a lot more space and a slope. This gave us the perfect opportunity to go over descending, and particularly stopping at the bottom. I tried to get the Children to stop at the bottom, and then to stop without putting their feet down, basically just stopping and then immediately starting. It is a more difficult skill but a good one to learn. I was very impressed by the Children's knowledge; they had a good idea about gears, and we also talked about putting your weight back whilst descending and using a higher (harder) gear. Therefore when we went to climbing, the children were using a lower (easier) gear and moving their weight forward. The children also got out of their saddle whilst climbing which is good for short distances, dancing on the pedals.

Finally we put everything together and the Children were descending properly and using a higher a gear, before dropping their gear and climbing very well.

Well done to all.
