The plan was to announce the 2010 winner at the social in December but the snow beat us and we had to cancel the event..... but as time marches on and the news won’t keep… so here it is now.
We followed a subjective route back in 2009, so this time the plan was to use a factual basis to select the new Rider of the Year.
So….
By looking through all the riders’ results on the skills test that we’ve now done a couple of times, and by then doing some simple sums (based on percentages) it was a case of picking the boy or girl who outperformed their age group by the greatest margin.
And on that score Jasmine showed everyone else a clean pair of heels.
She completed the skills circuit in just 62% of the time taken by the other six-year-olds.
Jasmin’s two closest contenders were Joshua Sharples, aged five, with a figure of 76% and Adam Bignell, aged seven, who notched up a figure of 77%.
The group of six-year-olds as a whole recorded an average time of 68seconds to complete the little circuit with it’s line of cones to weave through out the ‘outward’ leg and it’s tricky right-angle turn into a narrow tube of cones on the ‘return’ leg.
By comparison, Jasmine was round and home in just 42 seconds. Splendid.
To mark the achievement, we’ll present Jasmine with the 2010 Best Rider Green Jersey at the next Raiders’ session on 30 January… if she is able to get along, that is.
Also that day….. we’ll give everyone the chance to log their first 2011 figures by setting out the circuit once again.
By way of a reminder here are the figures for 2010 (thought you can see them elsewhere on the website also)
Website extract:
The skills course that we've been doing in several schools this summer is being replicated at Raiders’ sessions from time to time.
Everyone rides against the stop-watch on their own and records a time.
Eventually we should get a long list of results of everyone.
Then we could work out the average times for each age group.
From that we could set performance standards so that everyone could see what they needed to achieve to get into the 'silver' and 'gold' bands for their age.
Pass another birthday and you’re into a new world…. as riders boost their skills at weaving and cornering they could step forward and apply to attempt to 'upgrade'.
Here's the figures from the first two sessions:
Sunday 3 Oct 2010
Sunday 7 Nov 2010
Note:
• There is a 10-second penalty for each cone knocked over - it has had an effect on several figures.
• There is a 'maximum' of 1min 30sec - it has used just the once when a rider forgot to turn at the far and went pedaling/wandering off into the mists of time… but with her dad in hot pursuit... thank you, that man.
