Starting from the Reigate Hill car park, a bustling turn out said 'pah' to the dark clouds and nippy temperatures for the second Raiders Family Outing. Great to see parents from the main club using the chance to get their kids out on a mini 'Club Run' too.
On the way to the car park with four bikes strapped to our car, we passed three Rouxs on the demon climb up Wray Lane (albeit we passed dad first, Freddie second and Teresa last so not sure what that says about relative levels of fitness!) so credit to them for putting in a few difficult miles first.
At the top we met the whole Vincent family with four year old Alex on a single gear bike smaller than dad Mark's front wheel! Also, Damon Crawshaw and son Daniel. My brood consisted of Sevi and Lucas with the Victoria Pendeltons of the family choosing to do some gardening... we'll get them out next time!
The very gentle off-road route took us out east across the North Downs to cross over the M25 and down to the Sportsman pub. This was followed by a section gathering clay on our tyres around Walton heath and finally back up the side of the golf course to retrace our steps.
Freddie, Daniel and Lucas had no problems at all and enjoyed the challenge. Elliot and Sevi both flagged a little but kept going with the promise of crisps at the cafe. (Sorry folks, I didn't know it was closed... I don't know why it's closed when there's such trade to be done!)... But the Green Jersey for the day went to little Alex Vincent. With only a few pushes from Dad and yours truly, he made it round a 6.5mile course at 4 years old on a single gear. He did have extra nattering power on his side which made it all the more fun cycling with him.
A really enjoyable trip for everyone involved and as you can see from the photo, by the time we'd neared the end the parents were ready for a bit of a zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
