First taste of racing at Palmer Park, Reading... and first win goes to a surprise new name

The Pullen family responded to the suggestion of trying out a morning of racing with the kids who are members of Palmer Park Velo...... and joined them on their own patch last Saturday.

PPV junior cycle squad is blassed with a lovely red-surfaced, all-weather track that is about 400m round. It has banked corners so you simply can't go too fast!!

The idea was for mum, dad and four-year-old Chloe to watch the two top guns, Jamie and Ben (on road bikes), get into action but the organisers thought otherwise.... and they got Chloe entered into the first race for 4-6 year olds.

Protests of her having only a dress and having no helmet were to no avail.... as correctly-sized shorts were produced (and bought) and a helmet was loaned and away she flew.... and won the race!! Well done Chloe. So - the first gold.

Shane Benson, the coach, put Jamie and Ben into the novices race, mostly for 6-8 year-olds, as he'd never seen them before.  They ran home in first and second place. Splendid... well done to you both.

The next race took place immediately afterwards and Shane got them into the line-up for that as well. They weren't on the front this time though as the tiredness from their previous efforts took its toll.

Danyel (dad) said it was a good day out, a nice introduction to another group of riders and the day was both fun and competitive.... and they're all up for more.

Jamie and Ben worked with a racing good instinct, one hof them being shouting to the other during the race: "I'll go on the front while you take a rest."

Note from John:
By the time we get to my afternoon of racing at Hillingdon on 2 October we might have quite a handful of Raiders mixing it at this rate!!

There will be £300 to be won in the five childrens' age categories.
